Notable Poets who have passed away in 2014
1.9.14 – Amiri Baraka – one of the most influential African American writers of his generation, who courted controversy as a poet, playwright and provocateur and who was a primary intellectual architect of the Black Arts movement of the 1960s, died Jan. 9 at a hospital in Newark. He was 79.
2.7.14 – Maxine Kumin – a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet whose spare, deceptively simple lines explored some of the most complex aspects of human existence — birth and death, evanescence and renewal, and the events large and small conjoining them all — died on Thursday, Feb. 7 at her home in Warner, N.H. She was 88.
2.12.14 – Maggie Estep – a novelist and spoken-word poet who helped popularize slam poetry on MTV, HBO and PBS in the 1990s, died on Wednesday, Feb. 12 in Albany. She was 50.
